Believing that Jesus IS the Resurrection and the Life

August 27, 2008

Christians owe their faith to one main event: the glorious and triumphant resurrection of their Lord, Savior, King, and Treasure Jesus Christ. Our faith is founded on the truth of that historic and eternal event. Jesus Christ is not dead, He is alive!

Though not only did Jesus Christ rise from death and is now seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven, but He IS the resurrection and the life!

King Jesus made one of the most shocking statements in John 11, addressing Lazarus’ sister, Martha, and her unbelief and misunderstanding of the resurrection and of Christ’s power:

17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles [3] off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. [4] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

I am the resurrection and the life! What a truth! He did not only resurrect from the dead and come back to life but He Himself, in bodily form as man and God, is the resurrection and life! If we believe in Him, though he may die, he will live, (and does live) and if we live and believe in Him we will “never die”. Wow! That’s a promise of eternal life. A life that will be victorious over death because of Jesus Christ.

Jesus then asks a piercing question: “Do you believe this?” Today Jesus is asking us the same question with the same offer. Do we believe this?

Theologically speaking, Christians should not fear death at all. Because we know we have a heavenly home that is waiting on us with a King who pleads for us; a great High Priest who is rescuing us and making us righteous to stand before His throne! But practically speaking, we do fear death. We don’t fear so much how we are going to die, but that we are going to die. But Christian, Jesus is challenging our belief in Him and assuring us that if we indeed believe in Him, and believe that He was raised from the dead unto eternal life then we will never die. That’s a promise out of the mouth of God Himself!

That means our faith in Him and His resurrection transfers His resurrection power and applies it to us. Our faith in His resurrection guarantees our resurrection in Him. If we trust in His eternality we will receive His eternality.

It’s a promise we can trust and cling to. Jesus is coming back to rescue those who believe He is who He said He is and He’ll do what He said He’ll do. Trust in that and put your full faith in God’s promise to keep His word.

For He is faithful, He cannot deny Himself, 2 Timothy 2:8-13

8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for:

If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—

for he cannot deny himself.

    Wow, it’s hard to even fathom the truth that we will never die! You were right, it is mind boggling! It’s so great to just let this truth sink in and sort of marinate in my brain. I don’t know if I’ll ever truly “get” it, but I believe it nonetheless, because my Lord says so!

  2. God is Great and God is Good. See you there.
